Pakistan International Airlines has appointed aviation executive Adrian Hamilton-Manns, a former chief executive of three airlines with more than 30 years in the industry, as its new chief executive, with him formally taking charge on Monday.

Pakistan International Airlines has appointed Adrian Hamilton-Manns as its new chief executive officer, with the aviation executive formally taking charge on Monday, 2 November. The appointment was announced by the airline’s board, which described it as a pivotal chapter in PIA’s ongoing transformation under its new private-sector management.

In a statement shared on social media on Monday, PIA said Hamilton-Manns brings a wealth of leadership and strategic experience within the global aviation sector. The airline said he has managed three airlines as chief executive, is considered a world expert in transforming and reviving airlines, and has more than 30 years of professional experience. The appointment was reported by Dawn, the Express Tribune and Business Recorder, all carrying the airline’s announcement.

Hamilton-Manns succeeds Air Vice Marshal Amir Hayat, who led the national carrier for four and a half years. PIA’s board and the consortium now running the airline thanked Hayat for his service, saying his leadership had helped navigate the airline through significant industry challenges. The change at the top is one of the first major leadership moves since the airline passed into private-sector management earlier this year.

The new chief executive’s most recent role was at Oman’s low-cost carrier SalamAir, which he led from July 2024 until this year. Before that, he was president and chief executive of Kazakhstan’s FlyArystan, serving from April 2020 to July 2024. According to Forbes Middle East, cited by Dawn, he has also held roles at South African Airways and Virgin Australia, giving him experience across full-service and low-cost carriers on several continents.

That record is central to why the appointment matters. PIA is not being handed to a newcomer to airline turnarounds: Hamilton-Manns has built his reputation on reviving carriers, including taking a low-cost airline through expansion in a competitive Gulf market and running a Central Asian budget carrier through the pandemic years. The board’s language — calling him a world expert in transformation — signals that the new owners want exactly that kind of record at the top of the airline.

The appointment comes at a defining moment for the national carrier. PIA was privatised in December last year, when a consortium led by Arif Habib Corporation won the auction for a 75 per cent stake with a bid of Rs135 billion. The consortium took over the airline’s management on 29 June 2026. Since then, the carrier has been operating under private ownership for the first time in its history, with the new management expected to reshape its finances, fleet and route network.

The challenges facing the new chief executive are substantial, and they are well known to anyone who follows Pakistani aviation. PIA must improve its commercial viability after years of losses, restore reliability and passenger confidence, make the most of a fleet that has been renewed in part but still needs investment, and compete on international routes against Gulf carriers with far deeper resources. The airline’s leadership has also spoken of improving operational efficiency and international competitiveness, and those will be the measures against which Hamilton-Manns’s tenure is likely to be judged.

There is also a symbolic dimension to the appointment. For decades, PIA was led by serving or retired military officers and career civil servants, and its chief executives were almost always Pakistani nationals. The appointment of a New Zealand aviation executive with a career spent turning airlines around marks a break with that tradition, and it reflects the new owners’ willingness to look beyond Pakistan for leadership. It also places a foreign chief executive at the head of a carrier that remains a national symbol, which will make his early decisions closely watched in Pakistan.

What happens next will be watched in the airline’s first announcements under its new chief. Industry observers will look for signals on fleet plans, on whether loss-making routes are cut or expanded, on staffing and service standards, and on how PIA positions itself against Gulf and other regional rivals. None of those decisions has been announced yet, and Hamilton-Manns has not yet set out a public plan for the airline. His first task, in the airline’s own framing, is to lead its transformation — a broad mandate that leaves the specifics to be revealed in the weeks ahead.

For passengers, the immediate change is at the top rather than at the check-in desk: flights, bookings and schedules continue as before, and no operational changes were announced alongside the appointment. The significance of Monday’s announcement lies in who will now make the decisions about PIA’s future, and in the experience he brings to a carrier that its new owners intend to reshape. News Orbit Live will follow the new chief executive’s first moves and any strategy announcement from the airline.
