The Cabinet Division has confirmed Monday, 9 November 2026, as a public holiday across Pakistan for Iqbal Day, with banks and schools also closed and a three-day weekend in prospect.

The federal government has declared Monday, 9 November 2026, a public holiday across Pakistan to mark Iqbal Day, the birth anniversary of the national poet, Allama Muhammad Iqbal. The announcement, issued by the Cabinet Division on Thursday, confirms a nationwide closure of government offices, public institutions and educational establishments on the day.

According to the notification, 9 November “shall be a public holiday throughout the country on the occasion of Allama Iqbal Day”. The Cabinet Division pointed to its annual schedule of public and optional holidays, issued in January 2026, in which Iqbal Day already appeared as one of the year’s twelve public holidays. Thursday’s notification formally confirms the observance for this year.

The holiday falls on a Monday, which means workers and students who observe a Saturday–Sunday weekend will get a three-day break, from Saturday 7 November to Monday 9 November, with normal activities resuming on Tuesday, 10 November. The long weekend is expected to prompt travel plans for many families, as well as a busy few days for transport services and tourist spots.

The Punjab government has also declared 9 November a public holiday across the province to mark the 149th birth anniversary of the poet. In Sindh, the provincial government announced that all public and private schools will remain closed on the day to observe the occasion. Provincial authorities across the country are expected to issue their own notifications in line with the federal decision.

Banks will also remain closed. The State Bank of Pakistan has confirmed that it will stay shut on Monday, 9 November, in observance of Iqbal Day, and that banking operations involving public transactions will be suspended for the day. The central bank conveyed the closure to the heads of all banks, development finance institutions and microfinance banks through a circular issued earlier this week.

Allama Iqbal was born in Sialkot on 9 November 1877. Widely regarded as the spiritual father of Pakistan, he is remembered for poetry and philosophy that urged self-reliance, dignity and unity among the Muslims of the subcontinent. His ideas, most famously expressed in works such as Bang-e-Dra, Bal-e-Jibril and Zarb-e-Kaleem, helped shape the intellectual case for a separate homeland, and his 1930 Allahabad address remains a landmark in the country’s political history.

Iqbal Day has had an uneven history as a public holiday. It remained on the calendar of national holidays for decades, but the interior ministry cancelled the annual holiday in November 2015 without giving a reason. The holiday was restored in 2022 by the government of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and it has been observed as a nationwide public holiday since then.

Commemorations are expected across the country on Monday. Official ceremonies are traditionally held at the Mazar-e-Iqbal in Lahore, where the poet is buried beside the Badshahi Mosque, and special programmes, seminars and mushairas are organised by universities, literary bodies and cultural organisations. Schools and colleges are likely to hold special assemblies and competitions in the days leading up to the holiday.

The announcement also settles weeks of speculation about whether the day would be observed as a holiday this year. Because the date is fixed on the Gregorian calendar and does not depend on the sighting of the moon, it appeared in the Cabinet Division’s holiday schedule for 2026 from the start of the year. Thursday’s notification simply gave the confirmation that offices, schools and banks had been waiting for.

For parents and students, the practical effect is a short break in the school week, while government employees will plan around a closed Monday. Private-sector employers are not bound by the federal notification, though many follow the public-holiday calendar. Anyone with appointments at government offices, banks or educational institutions on 9 November should plan to visit on Tuesday instead.

Looking ahead, the observance is likely to be marked by the usual round of official tributes, with political leaders expected to issue messages recalling Iqbal’s message of khudi, or selfhood, and its relevance to the country’s present challenges. Cultural organisations in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad and Sialkot, the poet’s birthplace, are preparing events to mark the anniversary.
