Playback singer Kanika Kapoor has announced that she and businessman Gautam Hathiramani are going their separate ways, four years after their wedding in London, asking fans for kindness and privacy as they move forward.

Playback singer Kanika Kapoor has announced her separation from her husband, businessman Gautam Hathiramani, after four years of marriage, sharing the news in an emotional note on social media on Tuesday night.

In a statement posted to her Instagram Story, Kapoor wrote: “Dear friends and family, after much thought and consideration, my husband and I are going our separate ways. I am grateful for the time we shared and wish him well for the future. I sincerely ask for kindness and respect for our privacy as we move forward. Love, Kanika.”

The announcement came a day after Kapoor removed their wedding photographs from her Instagram account, a move that had already prompted speculation among her followers before she confirmed the separation herself.

Kapoor, 48, married Hathiramani, a London-based businessman, in an intimate ceremony in London on 20 May 2022, in the presence of close friends and family. Hathiramani is a senior executive in the Dana Group of companies, which has a strong presence across West Africa, and is based for work in Lagos.

In an interview with Mumbai Mirror following the announcement, Kapoor addressed speculation about the reasons for the split directly. She said no third person was involved, and denied reports that the marriage had ended because she did not want to move to Lagos.

“I have not found anybody else, and to the best of my knowledge, neither has Gautam,” she said. “For me, this is my second time for a divorce and that brings its own grief and disappointment.”

Kapoor was previously married to businessman Raj Chandok, whom she married in 1999. That marriage ended in divorce in 2012, and the couple have three children together.

The singer rose to fame with a string of Bollywood party hits, including “Baby Doll”, “Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan” and “Lovely”, and she remains one of the most recognisable playback voices in Hindi cinema.

Neither Kapoor nor Hathiramani has shared further details about the separation, and Kapoor has not indicated whether divorce proceedings have been initiated, leaving the personal details of the split, for now, a private matter between the couple.

Messages of support from fans followed the announcement, with many praising her for addressing the news herself rather than leaving it to rumour, and for the measured tone of her statement.

What comes next for Kapoor professionally is unchanged for now: she has made no announcement about her work alongside the personal news, and the focus of her statement was firmly on asking for privacy while she and Hathiramani go their separate ways.
