Petrol falls to Rs362 a litre and high-speed diesel to Rs387.81 under the daily pricing mechanism, the second fuel-price cut in two days.

The federal government has cut petrol prices by Rs7.06 a litre and high-speed diesel by Rs3.71 a litre for November 5, bringing petrol down to Rs362 a litre and diesel to Rs387.81 a litre under Pakistan’s daily petroleum pricing mechanism.

The revised rates were announced on Wednesday by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and the Petroleum Division, and take effect from midnight for November 5 only. Before the change, petrol was selling at Rs369.06 a litre and high-speed diesel at Rs391.52 a litre, so the new figures are a direct reduction from those levels.

The announcement makes it the second fuel-price cut in two days. A day earlier, petrol had already been reduced by Rs5.45 a litre and diesel by Rs3.68 a litre as the new rates for November 4 took effect, meaning motorists have now seen two successive daily revisions in their favour.

The change matters most to everyday road users. Petrol is the fuel used by the vast majority of private cars and motorcycles, so a cut of more than seven rupees a litre feeds straight into the cost of commuting, school runs and family travel, even if the saving on a single tank is modest.

Diesel carries a different weight in the economy. High-speed diesel powers trucks, buses, farm machinery and much of the country’s goods transport, so a reduction in its price can ease pressure on freight costs and, over time, on the prices of goods moved by road.

The prices announced are ex-depot prices, set under the petroleum pricing mechanism approved by the federal government. OGRA has also begun publishing daily petroleum prices on its website, a step presented as improving transparency in how the daily figures are worked out.

The shift to daily pricing is itself a change from the older pattern, under which fuel prices were typically revised at longer intervals. Under a daily system, each day’s figure reflects the latest calculation rather than holding for a fortnight, which means prices can move down — or up — more often, and in smaller steps.

For households already dealing with high living costs, a second consecutive cut will be welcome, but its real effect will depend on what happens next. Transport operators and traders watch diesel closely, and whether any saving reaches passengers and consumers depends on fares, freight charges and market prices adjusting in turn.

The daily system also means the relief is not locked in. Another revision can follow for the next day, and the direction of that revision will depend on the same pricing calculation — so Wednesday’s cut, while real for November 5, is a one-day rate rather than a longer-term price freeze.

For now, the position for Thursday is clear: petrol at Rs362 a litre and high-speed diesel at Rs387.81 a litre, down Rs7.06 and Rs3.71 respectively from the previous day’s rates, in the second cut of the week under the daily mechanism.
