PIMS team examines Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi at Adiala Jail, couple allowed to meet

A special medical team from Islamabad’s PIMS Hospital conducted separate examinations of PTI founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi at Adiala Jail on Saturday, with reports saying the couple were also allowed to meet during the visit.

A special medical team from Islamabad’s Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) visited Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on Saturday and conducted separate medical examinations of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, according to reports by ARY News, SAMAA TV, UrduPoint and 24NewsHD.

The team comprised PIMS doctors Muhammad Ali and Arif, accompanied by paramedical staff, the reports said, citing jail sources. The doctors arrived at the prison during the day, carried out the examinations under the supervision of the jail administration, and left for Islamabad after completing their work.

Both examinations were described as detailed and separate. The reports said the doctors carried out comprehensive physical check-ups, routine follow-up assessments and a number of necessary medical tests, including checks of blood pressure and other basic vital signs, with samples collected for some tests.

Reports also said that Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were allowed to meet during the visit and enquired about each other’s health and well-being. Accounts differ slightly on the exact sequence, with some saying the meeting took place during the medical process and others after the check-ups, but all agree that a meeting was permitted before the couple returned to their separate blocks.

No medical findings from Saturday’s visit have been made public. None of the reports disclosed test results, specific clinical findings, any change in treatment, or whether either patient was referred for further specialist consultation, and there is therefore no basis in the available reporting for concluding that either person’s condition has improved or worsened.

UrduPoint reported that the examination was part of a follow-up check-up conducted under court orders and the jail’s prescribed medical regulations, intended to monitor their health and blood pressure-related concerns. That framing matters because it presents Saturday’s visit as a scheduled review rather than an emergency response, although the reports do not say whether the visit followed a fresh complaint, a routine timetable or a specific medical recommendation.

Saturday’s visit follows earlier examinations during their imprisonment. UrduPoint and ARY both recalled that around 20 September a team comprising doctors from PIMS and Shifa Eye Hospital conducted a routine medical and eye examination of Imran Khan at Adiala Jail, and that Bushra Bibi has likewise undergone medical examinations from time to time since her transfer to the jail.

The health of the jailed former prime minister and his wife is watched closely in Pakistan, where questions about the medical care of high-profile prisoners regularly become part of the wider political debate. That is why even a routine check-up at Adiala Jail is reported in detail, and why the absence of published findings tends to leave room for speculation that the reports themselves do not support.

A related development was reported on Friday, when SAMAA noted that Noreen Niazi, a sister of Imran Khan, was shifted back to Kot Lakhpat jail from the Punjab Institute of Cardiology after undergoing medical tests. The Lahore High Court had separately been hearing a petition concerning the detention and medical treatment of Imran Khan’s sisters, underlining how medical questions have run alongside the legal cases in recent days.

For now, the immediate development is narrow but clear: a PIMS team has visited Adiala Jail, examined both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi separately, conducted follow-up checks and tests, and departed, with the couple reported to have met during the visit. Any further detail on their health would have to come from the jail authorities, the hospital team or a court, and none has been published so far.
