Pakistan has successfully flight-tested Fa'az, its first indigenously developed air-to-air missile, from a JF-17 fighter, the military's media wing has said, calling it a milestone for the country's aerospace industry.

Pakistan has successfully conducted the flight test of its first indigenously developed air-to-air missile, Fa'az, the military's media wing said on Tuesday, describing the launch as another significant milestone in the advancement of the country's aerospace and defence capabilities.

According to a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the missile was launched from a JF-17 fighter aircraft. Video released with the announcement showed a missile marked 'FAAZ' leaving an underwing station of the aircraft, according to reports of the footage.

ISPR said Fa'az is equipped with a state-of-the-art terminal guidance system and is capable of engaging enemy aerial targets at longer ranges. The statement said the capability would significantly enhance the operational flexibility of the Pakistan Air Force.

The test was witnessed by senior officers of the armed forces along with scientists and engineers involved in developing the weapon system, according to the ISPR statement carried by state media.

What ISPR did not disclose is as notable as what it did. The statement gave no maximum range, speed, dimensions or seeker type for the missile, and it set out no timetable for when Fa'az might enter operational service with the Pakistan Air Force.

That restraint is common for a first public flight test of a new weapon. Militaries often confirm only that a system flew and performed as intended, holding back performance figures that could reveal how the weapon is meant to be used or countered.

Fa'az is the third missile test announced by Pakistan in about a month. On 6 October, the military announced the test of an extended-range version of the Fatah-IV ground-launched cruise missile, and on 13 October it announced the test of the extended-range Fatah-2 hypersonic ballistic missile.

The sequence matters because it spans different parts of Pakistan's arsenal. The Fatah systems are surface-to-surface weapons operated by the Army, while Fa'az is an air-to-air weapon for the Air Force, filling a different role in air combat.

For the Pakistan Air Force, an indigenous air-to-air missile would reduce reliance on imported weapons for its fighter fleet. The JF-17 Thunder, jointly developed by Pakistan and China, remains a central part of the force's modernisation programme, and a locally developed missile to arm it fits a long-standing push towards self-reliance in defence production.

Analysts will now watch for the next steps: whether further test flights are announced, whether Fa'az appears in military exercises or displays, and whether any induction announcement follows. Until then, the confirmed facts remain narrow but clear — a first flight test, from a JF-17, of a Pakistani-developed air-to-air missile with an advanced terminal guidance system.
