Opposition leaders from the PTI, JUI-F and the Tehreek-i-Tahafuz-i-Ayin-i-Pakistan met at Maulana Fazlur Rehman's Islamabad residence and agreed to strengthen their alliance, form committees to settle differences and consult on a multi-party conference.

Pakistan's opposition parties have moved to present a united front, gathering at the Islamabad residence of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and agreeing to strengthen their alliance and coordinate more closely inside parliament.

The meeting, held on Wednesday, brought together senior figures from the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), the JUI-F and the Tehreek-i-Tahafuz-i-Ayin-i-Pakistan (TTAP), the opposition alliance headed by Mahmood Khan Achakzai. According to Dawn's report of the gathering, the leaders discussed several pressing matters and decided to form committees to resolve mutual differences and take forward consultations on a multi-party conference.

Among those present were Achakzai, the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, and Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, the opposition leader in the Senate. From the PTI came former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser, party secretary general Salman Akram Raja, National Assembly chief whip Amir Dogar and Senator Noorul Haq Qadri.

The TTAP described the gathering as a meeting of a 'united opposition'. An earlier JUI-F statement had said the talks would cover the situation around the emergency and governor's rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as well as plans for a multi-party conference, and those subjects were indeed at the centre of the discussion, according to the report.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been the sharpest point of contention between the government and the opposition in recent weeks. The federal government suspended the provincial government led by the PTI in October and detained its chief minister, Sohail Afridi, invoking constitutional provisions dealing with security, in a move the opposition has fiercely contested.

The meeting also raised the health of PTI founder Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned since August 2023. Dawn's report noted that PTI leaders expressed alarm over reports of his high blood pressure, a concern that has repeatedly surfaced in the party's public statements about his detention conditions.

Wednesday's gathering did not come out of nowhere. On 20 August, following a meeting between Fazl and Achakzai, the alliance and the JUI-F had already announced plans to form a 'united opposition', and the two sides have been working since then to bridge differences that have historically kept them apart.

That history matters. Fazl, a veteran of parliamentary politics, was once one of the closest allies of the parties now in government, and headed the multi-party Pakistan Democratic Movement that ousted Imran Khan through a no-confidence vote in 2022. His gradual move towards the opposition camp therefore carries weight beyond the symbolism of a single meeting.

Before Wednesday's meeting, the opposition had also been expected to consider the government's invitation to join a proposed electoral reforms committee, with PTI figures questioning a proposed composition of 15 government members against five from the opposition. Whether the new committees agreed at Fazl's residence will take up that question is one of the first tests of how far the renewed coordination goes.

What happens next will be judged by actions rather than statements. If the committees produce a shared parliamentary strategy and a genuinely broad multi-party conference, the opposition will be able to challenge the government with a single voice on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, electoral reform and Imran Khan's detention. If the old differences resurface, Wednesday's show of unity may prove to be little more than a photograph at a familiar Islamabad address.
