The Islamabad High Court has granted TikToker Muhammad Ansar Mahmood protective bail until November 10 in the case over a stampede at his Sialkot wedding event that killed two people and injured around eighteen others.

The Islamabad High Court has granted protective bail to TikToker Muhammad Ansar Mahmood, known online as Mr Patlo, in the case over a deadly stampede at his wedding celebrations in Sialkot, as the legal fallout from an event that killed two young men and injured around eighteen others continues to unfold.

A single bench of the court, headed by Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar, granted the bail on Tuesday, allowing Mahmood until November 10 to approach the relevant court for further relief. Reports said Mahmood appeared before the court in a wheelchair, and the order shields him from arrest in the meantime while he seeks a remedy from the trial court.

The case stems from a mehndi ceremony and prize-distribution event held on Friday night, October 31, at the Faraz Sports Stadium on Daska Road in Sialkot. Mahmood, a hugely popular live-streaming personality, had promoted the event on social media with the promise of a lavish lucky draw: 20 million rupees in cash, a car, 50 motorcycles and smartphones for those who attended.

Thousands of people turned up. When the stadium gates opened, the surging crowd triggered a stampede in which people fell and were trampled. One victim, Muhammad Aqeel, a 30-year-old resident of Budha Goraya, died at the scene. A second man, Muhammad Rehan of Glotian Kalan, was critically injured, was referred to Mayo Hospital in Lahore, and later succumbed to his injuries, taking the confirmed death toll to two. Police and rescue officials put the number of injured at between 17 and 20, while some social media claims of far higher casualties have not been supported by any official source.

Police registered a first information report at Motra police station on October 31, naming Mahmood, his brother Kashif Bashir, the ground owner Shahid Javed and several other organisers, along with 45 unidentified private security guards. The charges include culpable homicide, unlawful assembly, rioting, mischief and causing death through negligence. Six people were arrested in the days that followed, and police later recovered the 50 motorcycles and a car that had reportedly been arranged for the lucky draw.

Mahmood, who had been in hiding since the incident, has denied being present at the venue when the crush happened. In a tearful video message that spread widely online, he said he had injured his back playing cricket the day before, was at a hospital for an MRI scan at the time, and had already posted a video calling off the remaining functions and asking people to go home. He has appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and senior military and political leaders for an impartial investigation, saying he has always defended government policies and should not be blamed for the tragedy.

The district administration had granted permission for the wedding functions from October 31 to November 7, with the mehndi due to begin after Isha prayers, according to Deputy Commissioner Awais Mushtaq. Investigators are now examining how the event was managed, including the role of security staff at the gates. Footage of the incident showed guards opening the gate and then trying to push the surging crowd back, a sequence police say contributed to the crush.

The episode has also raised wider questions about the commercialisation of online fame. Mahmood built his following through live streams and public giveaways, and the Sialkot event combined a personal celebration with a mass public promotion, including an announcement that he would pay for the weddings of 20 poor and orphaned girls. Critics argue that such promotions, aimed at drawing the largest possible crowd, carry obvious crowd-safety risks when staged at venues never designed for tens of thousands of people.

What happens next will be decided in the courts. Mahmood must approach the relevant court by November 10 under the terms of the protective bail, while the police investigation into the organisers and security arrangements continues. For the families of Aqeel and Rehan, the proceedings offer the first formal step towards accountability, but also a reminder of how slowly such cases can move once the headlines fade.

For now, the incident stands as a cautionary tale about the collision of social media celebrity and public safety: a wedding celebration promoted like a carnival ended in two funerals, a police case against more than fifty people, and a high court order that will decide whether its most famous accused faces arrest or walks free pending trial.
